The meeting was taking place in a secure bunker deep underground in Southern Germany, the date, 2 May 1944. A tall man in a white lab coat was addressing the group of businessmen and military while WW2 went on all around the world.
“Germany is going to lose the war”, Dr. Kurt von Schnitzel said to a disbelieving crowd. “I know, the Reich controls all of Europe, but I have been to the future several times, and I read the history books in 2007. If we use what I have learned to try to save the Riech, it will only make it worse for Germany. I surmise that if the Allied invasion that will take place next month fails, then the United States will use atomic bombs on Germany. It would be better if Germany loses quickly and the damage is no made worse that what it is. I have a plan to make Germany THE world superpower within 10 years. Hans, let me see your cup, the coffee is cold by now.”
Taking the cup of tepid coffee from the hands of the stunned banker, Dr. von Schnitzel took the cover from a box that had a glass front on it. He put the cup inside the box, closed the door, and turned it on. The box hummed for less than a minute and Dr. Schnitzel took a VERY hot cup of coffee from the box and handed it to Hans.
“It is a microwave oven, I brought it back from the United States from the year 2007”, Dr. von Schnitzel told the group. “I have made the breakthrough in time travel. My plan is to go to the future and bring back items we can ‘invent' and German industrial power will propel Germany to the top of the world's economic power. We will own the United States and England, and they will pay to buy our products. Oh yes, they will pay.”
The 8 men that heard the news were totally stunned. Hans Bruno, the banker recovered first, “We must not let the Gestapo know about it, that fool Hitler would take the machine and only make things worse. This MUST stay secret; it is the only way it is going to work. No one outside this room can ever find out about it.”
The men talked about the future, how to take 21st Century products and reverse engineer them, and start producing new and unimagined wonders to sell to the rest of the world, the patents they would get, and the wealth….
There was a louder hum, followed by the lights dimming and a sharp crack. Dr. von Schnitzel jumped up and ran towards the rear of the building, “GOTT IN HIMMEL!”
He drew the Walther P-38 he had in his lab coat pocket and he sprinted toward the Time Machine, but stopped as he saw the machine was cooling down.
“SOMEONE just cycled the machine! I don't know who, but someone went forward in time to 2007. They went to someplace called Agate, in the American state of Colorado. I've been there before several times. Who is missing?” Then it hit him, his nieces were gone. A quick look around verified that the power belts needed for a return trip were all there. So the girls jumped forward in time, and they are stranded there. Without the power belts, they could not return to 1944.
Von Schnitzel informed the group. Oberst Walter Braun spoke quietly, “I can have a group of men here in 2 days that speak flawless American English, are totally dedicated to me, and are ruthless. If I promise them a piece of future profits, they will make sure that no leak survives.”
Von Schnitzel went pale, but he swallowed and nodded, sealing his nieces' fate.
On the grasslands just north of a major road, the girls looked at each other. They moved toward a small town, speaking in German to each other, planning how they were going to stop their mad Uncle. The first truck, something out of the future, stopped and a grinning man asked the girls if the needed a ride.
The girls, having learned English while at university in the United States, accepted a ride. The man was Will Smith, a local gun store owner. The new Dodge Ram was paid for by selling WW2 militaria he had been buying for some weird old geezer. These girls looked and spoke as if they came from the same place, somewhere in Europe, probably Germany.
The girls got out in a town called Limon. They traded some Polish amber, and a few gold coins to get local currency. Then they sought out an Army veterans group. They explained to a retired Colonel about their uncle. The man clearly did not believe the girls, until the oldest of the three girls opened the large bag she was carrying and handed the retired officer a pristine MP-40, a Waffen SS dagger, German ID papers that looked like something from WW2, and 47 DM in bills printed in 1942 and 1943. That convinced the vet.
They knew they could not go to the authorities, no one except the tabloids or gossip papers would believe them. So taking the advice of the Colonel, they made a trip to the local VFW, and then the American Legion, then to a farm auction where they met with a group of local ranchers. The number of modern Americans that were willing to join the fight to stop the Germans was growing, and the resistance was picking up momentum. When the Germans came back to the future, they would find a reception waiting. The Germans, gathering English speaking troops and industrial security specialist are gathering numbers of their own.
Now the battle lines are drawn, the Germans goal is to silence the girls, and recover the modern high tech to take back to 1944. The locals and the girls are bound and determined to stop them. The future, er, present, as we know it, hangs in the balance.
